The following body of work was conceived during the last few years in part thanks to a grant from the Joan Mitchel Foundation.
I see the process of painting as an alchemical and poetic expression. Thus, the two series presented here are named accordingly: “Levitation and Gravitation” and “Distillation of Cinnabar”.
Gravitational fields open with gratitude, a state of awareness that creates alignment with the receptive and feminine nature of the Earth. Levity, the boundless energy of spirit lifting upwards, emerges from the attitude of praise. These are secrets both scientists and mystics try to grasp and transcend.
“Distillation of Cinnabar” playfully articulates the mesmerizing redness of cinnabar pigment, as well as its principal source: ore of mercury. Neither solid, liquid nor gas, this dancing metal, quick silver, flickering prima materia, has paradoxical properties reflecting those of life, soul and spirit.
I see my paintings as alchemical equations, as alchemy which leverages into the song of greater self, where I as an artist am part of the equation.
